Creston at a Glance
Creston lies just to the south of Kootenay
Lake's lowest reaches in a region renowned for its temperate climate and lush
natural beauty. Sitting just above the Kootenay River and surrounded by a ring
of mountains, orchards of cherry and apple trees spread out from Creston filling
roadside stalls with plenty of fresh, juicy fruit during summer months. The abundant
fruit harvest is celebrated in the annual Creston
Valley Blossom Festival, a fun-filled event that brings friendly locals out
each May for a number of festivities, including a parade, a street fair and a
vintage car show. The long, mild summers have also drawn artists to Creston and
its streets boast a wealth of studios and galleries.
For nature lovers, the Creston
Valley Wildlife Centre is a quick trip north. This 17,000-hectare (42,000-acre)
nature reserve is home to 265 bird species and sits on the shores of Lake Kootenay,
itself a natural wonder. This clear mountain lake draws fishers, boaters and water
skiiers to its coves and beaches.
